FOREWORD

Doctors play an essential role in our society as they devote themselves to caring for their patients. The treatment of an ailment does not depend only on the medical expertise of a doctor; his or her warm heartedness, care and concern for a patient are essential for the treatment to be effective. I truly believe that when my gallstone were removed a few years ago, the affectionate care of doctors, nurses and other hospital staff were essential to my speedy recovery.

While doctors and medical staff do their best to save lives, it is important to accept that a successful outcome is sometimes beyond their control. As in all situations in life, it is important that we do our best while understanding that we won’t always be successful.

I commend Dr. Debraj Shome and Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker for presenting the thoughts of many of their fellow physicians in their book, Dear People, With Love and Care, Your Doctors.
