Dr Nikhil Datar, MD, is a practising gynaecologist since 1997 in Mumbai, India. He is a renowned thought leader and health rights activist specializing in patient and abortion rights.
A recipient of multiple gold medal awards and international fellowships, he has been a significant advocate for women’s reproductive rights in India. Dr Datar played a crucial role in challenging and amending the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, advocating for the extension of the legal abortion limit from twenty to twenty-four weeks and the removal of time limits for cases involving foetal abnormalities.
He has also worked extensively to improve the care and treatment of rape survivors. As a prolific writer and visiting professor at Maharashtra National Law University, Dr Datar emphasizes patient empowerment and education, believing that patients should be active partners in their healthcare. His
work continues to shape India’s reproductive health policies, ensuring safer and more inclusive healthcare for women.
